Overview

Form 8809 is used to request a 30-day extension to file certain information returns, including Forms 1099, W-2, 1095, and others.

This extension applies only to the deadline for filing the forms, not the IRS recipient copy deadline. To request an extension for the recipient copy deadline, you must file Form 15397 instead. Learn more

Key endpoints for 8809 filing

You can use the following endpoints to complete the 8809 filing.

  • Create - Creates a new Form 8809 extension request.
  • Update - Updates an existing Form 8809 request with corrected information.
  • Transmit - Submits the Form 8809 request to the IRS via fax. 

PDF retrieval

  • GetPdf - Returns the PDF copy of the Form 8809 generated in TaxBandits via webhooks (if configured). Use this if you want to download the transmitted form for your records.
  • RequestPdfURLs - Generates a secure URL to access the PDF version of the transmitted form. 

Status retrieval

You have two different options.

  • Status - You can use this endpoint to get the status of your extension request.
  • Webhooks - Configure webhooks for the event type ‘E-file Status Change’ to receive real-time updates.

Other endpoints

  • Get - Retrieves the details of a Form 8809 created in TaxBandits.
  • Delete - Deletes an existing Form 8809. Applicable only if the form has not yet been transmitted.
