Overview
Payers required to file year-end information returns (such as 1099 or 1042-S) must collect the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), name, and the other required information from the corresponding recipients (vendors, contractors, or other payees).
To gather this information, payers must use the IRS Form W-9 (for U.S. persons) or the appropriate version of the Form W-8 (for non-U.S. persons).
- Form W-9 - For U.S. citizens, resident aliens, and entities
- Form W-8BEN - For non-U.S. individuals
- Form W-8BEN-E - For non-U.S. entities
- Form W-8ECI - For non-U.S. individuals or entities claiming income is effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business
- Form W-8IMY – For intermediaries, flow-through entities, or certain U.S. branches
- Form W-8EXP – For foreign governments, tax-exempt organizations, foreign central banks of issue, and other specific entities
