Corrections (941-X)
If you need to make changes to the 941 forms you've previously submitted and accepted by the IRS, you can use Form 941-X.
Until 2023, Form 941-X can only be filed on paper. However, starting in 2024, you can e-file 941-X. TaxBandits currently supports Form 941-X only for original Forms 941 filed for the 2024 tax year.
Key Points :
- TaxBandits API supports 941 corrections even if you have filed your original return elsewhere or by other means (paper filing).
- You can file a correction only if the IRS has Accepted the original form.
- You can file a correction for an already corrected return.
Criteria for filing Form 941-X
Form 941-X can be filed to correct both underreported and overreported taxes:
- Under-reported taxes occur when an employer reports and pays less than the actual tax liability on Form 941, requiring additional payment to the IRS.
- Over-reported taxes happen when an employer reports and pays more than the actual tax liability, allowing for a refund or credit through Form 941-X.

You can use Form 941-X to correct the following information.
- Wages, tips, and other compensation
- Federal income tax withheld from wages, tips, and other compensation
- Taxable Social Security wages
- Taxable Social Security tips
- Taxable Medicare wages and tips
- Taxable wages and tips that are subject to Additional Medicare Tax withholding
- Qualified small business payroll tax credit for increasing research activities (Form 8974)
- Deferred amount of the employer's share of Social Security tax
- Deferred amount of the employee share of Social Security tax
- Qualified small business payroll tax Credit for Increasing Research Activities
